What Happens After I Shoot The Bad Guy In A Self Defense Situation?
I got my Texas Conceal Carry license 2 months ago and I conceal my Glock 22 in a Galco N3 IWB holster. I walk around with it and I have it loaded with 135 grain Glaser Pow'R'ball rounds in it. If I ever had to protect my life outside my home in the street, or within my home, or within my car.......what happens after I shoot the bad guy in a self defense situation?
Generally, this happens:
1. cops show up and confiscate your gun - it is now evidence. It will be returned after an investigation clears you.
2. cops ask you about what happened. Be careful here, if you misspeak yourself, you will find yourself charged with a serious crime. Sometimes it is just best to lawyer up and wait until everything gets back to normal before talking to authorities.
3. detectives will conduct an investigation. They will talk to other witnesses, examine and gather evidence, and will try to determine if your shooting was justified, unjustified, negligent, or an outright murder.
4. The press will be on you like a bad smell. It is best not to talk to them until you talk to your lawyer. If the press can make you look like some crazed killer, they will do so.
5. It is very possible the family of the person you shot will sue you. Defending such a suit can be very costly.
6. If everything works out right, i.e., the shooting is determined to be justified, there are no charges, there is no lawsuit, etc. You will find friends and co-workers treating you differently. Weird looks, tasteless jokes, and even some folks who will avoid you. There may also be some Post Traumatic Stress which may be limited to sleepless nights, or nightmares, or become serious enough that your normal day to day life is seriously affected. Seek help if that happens.
