Subwoofers are louder with trunk open?
I have two 150 watt 12" kickers facing rearward in the trunk of a 2000 Buick century that are powered by a kicker zx300.1 amplifier and they both work very well together. The only problem is that when I listen to them with the trunk open the sound is quite a bit louder than it is with the trunk closed. I read up on this problem and thought it might be related to sound cancellation and sub box placement. So I experimented with box positions but it made no difference where ever I put them. The trunk is very well insulated and there are a lot of layers of fabric and other stuff in between the trunk and the rear seats. I was wondering if the trunk is absorbing all the sound or if it's something else and how I can fix this.
It is simple physics. With the trunk closed, the subwoofers are working harder and pushing their own sound waves around that they are producing. With the trunk open they do not have to "compete" with their own sound waves.
My subwoofers in my 1995 Caprice wagon get louder when the windows are open for the same reason I just gave above.
