Jumps Fabric
Does your cat like the smell of new fabric?
My cats are magnetically drawn to any kind of new fabric. If I order clothes from a catalog, they like to jump in the box and nuzzle the new items. I put new slipcovers on my couch, and they went into nappy dopey dreamland over them. (I actually thought they'd hate the covers because they had a slightly chemical smell, like they'd been stored in a warehouse for too long ... nope!) They strongly prefer "new" smell to "freshly laundered" or "smells like one of them". What's up with that?
Have you ever noticed this behavior? Or is it just my fuzzy little weirdos?
Actually, I just finished reading a book called "If Your Cat Could Talk" and one of the chapters explained that behavior. They do it because things and people they like should have their "family scent" on it/them. You might notice that your cats will lick/rub/clean you and lay all over your clothes once you come back from a trip- it's because you've lost the "family scent" and they want to make sure that everyone knows that you are THEIRS. So now I find it less annoying when they have to jump in the laundry basket that is full of freshly cleaned clothes or open the shopping bags and roll all over the new stuff.
