Why/How would a BM be a SEAL?
I know someone that is a retired Petty Officer in the US Navy, and he holds the Boatswain's Mate (BM) rating instead of the Special Warfare Operator (SEAL/UDT) rating. He claims he is a SEAL and he wears the eagle and trident badge. I wasn't aware this was possible. I would think that if he earned the badge and he finished BUDS he would hold the rating of SEAL instead of BM.
Used to be that there weren't any SEALs. Since WW II they were UDT. They were tough and proud. They didn't have a special rating. They came from the fleet as Gunner's Mates, Boatswain's Mates, and other usually deck ratings.
When the SEAL program was inaugurated in 1962, rather than wait to train a bunch of guys to swim, SCUBA dive, handle explosives, stuff like that, they "recruited" from the UDT ranks. Those guys joined with the rating they had when they were UDT.
For about thirty years that's kind of the way it remained. The guys struck for a "feeder" rating and then, at their earliest opportunity, applied for SEAL.
A few years ago, the SEALS got their own rating, SO. The new guys are SO. But the guys who've been around a few years, retain their old ratings... and retire with them.
