Service Rate

What is the going rate for a maid service?

My friend and I are both moms and work jobs which are not flexible. We were thinking of starting a janitorial service of sorts. Cleaning businesses, and move in and move outs (rentals, real estate to be sold, etc.) Any suggestions for a rate to charge?

It will depend on the state in which you live and the demand for those services.

In San Diego I charged $50 an hour with a one hour minimum. That was for apartment make-ready. That means, if all I was asked to do was clean an oven, and it only took me 30 minutes, I still made $50.

In Hot Springs, AR the demand was not that great and many people thought they should only have to pay $5 an hour. I decided not to pursue the business in that city.

In Tulsa I charged between $30-45 an hour with a one hour minimum. I cleaned homes and businesses.

My suggestion is to look in your local yellow pages for cleaning services. Ask for a quote as though you were interested in hiring them. If you're not experienced, reduce that amount by 30-50% until you build up a reputation. You can begin charging more later. Word of mouth will be your greatest advertisement.

I wish you success with your venture should you decide to do it. It's great exercise too!
