Spec Forces
If you could rate all of the Spec Ops/ Special Forces jobs in the US military from 1 to 10?
How would you rate them? This can be from any branch, but please give your reasoning, and try to play nice ![]()
I find it sort of funny that everyone felt the need to throw their weight around when answering this question, when in the question itself I stated that it was a light hearted inquiry. Of course all of the different MOSs are difficult to rate because they aren't the same. It's supposed to be one fight, yet all of our fighters go around talking about who's got the bigger balls. I'm going for a USAF Special Tactics MOS, but you're not going to see me putting other people down to talk PJ's up. Bad form guys. This is why other nations think Americans lack class.
Personally, I wouldn't infiltrate without the Air Force's Special Tactics.
They (Combat Weather, PJ, Combat Control) are amongst the highest trained military personnel in the United States. Their initial training takes about 2 years to complete, only followed by more advanced training...
PJ's go down a pipeline including:
PJ Prep Course
PJ Indoc Course
Army Airborne School
AF Combat Diver School
Navy Underwater Egress training
AF Basic Survival School
Army Military Free-fall
PJ EMT Training
PJ Recovery Specialist Course
Combat Control:
Combat Control orientation
Combat Control Operator Course
Army Airborne School
AF Basic Survival School
Combat Control School
Special Tactics Advanced Skills Training
Army Military Free Fall
AF Combat Diver
Only to be followed by more training. Also Combat Control are FFA certified air traffic controllers. Special Operations Weatherman (Combat Weather) is also very important. Majority of para-drops of Airborne could not happen if it wasn't for the recon conducted by Combat Control and SOWT on the ground. Not only that but Combat Control also can seek out targets for bombing runs by the USAF.
Also most personnel in Special Tactics go on for Ranger school.
Here's a general overview of those fields...
Combat Control: "First There" The mission of a Combat Controller is to deploy undetected into combat and hostile environments to establish assault zones or airfields, while simultaneously conducting air traffic control, fire support, command, control, and communications and forward air control. They deploy with air and ground forces in support of direct action, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, humanitarian assistance, special reconnaissance, and combat search and rescue. Combat Controllers employ all-terrain vehicles, amphibious vehicles, weapons and demolitions in pursuit of their objectives, which may include obstacle destruction.
Pararescuemen: "That Others May Live" Airborne Combat Search and Rescue. Organized trained and equipped to conduct CSAR missions in denied or politically sensitive areas. They are also used for humanitarian missions as well as recovering astronauts for NASA after reentering the atmosphere.
Special Operations Weather Technicians: "Coela Bellatores," or "Weather Warriors". Conducts weather recon in a combat area. Deploy by the most feasible means available into combat and non-permissive environments to collect and interpret meteorological data and provide air and ground forces commanders with timely, accurate intelligence. They collect data, assist mission planning, generate accurate and mission-tailored target and route forecasts in support of global special operations, conduct special weather reconnaissance and train foreign national forces. SOWTs provide vital intelligence and deploy with joint air and ground forces in support of direct action, counter-terrorism, foreign internal defense, humanitarian assistance, special reconnaissance, austere airfield, and combat search and rescue.
10 out of 10.
But I do give a lot of respect to the other services Special Operations forces as well. A war cannot be fought without every branch.
They all have their job and purpose, so rating them compared to what?
The Air Force is a 10/10 with theirs, Navy 10/10 with theirs, Army 10/10 with theirs, Marines 10/10 as well.
Another job, not sure if its considered Special Operations however they do work with them is the USAF Aerial Gunner. Essentially they are the brass sweepers and gun loaders on AC-130s and gunners on the helicopters that Infil/Exfil these Special Tactics Teams.
