Just wondering if there's ANY way to do it nowadays
It depends on what it is made of and whether it has been colorized with enamel paint. If it is colorized odds are you will not be able to do anything with it without ruining the paint. If it has no paint maybe a gentle cleaning with mild soap and warm water would be best. Keep rubbing it to a minimum and pat it dry. You could also consider coin cleaning agents available at most coin shops. But I would practice with some modern coins as it is very easy to ruin a coin or challenge coin if you don't know what you are doing.
