Dept Defense

Have you worked ABROAD with the US Dept. of Defense as an SLP or teacher?

How long did it take you to get your assignment? Did they require you to just pick up and leave on a minute's notice? What is the pay like and what benefits are there (do they pay for housing, travel, insurance?)? Did they take any foreign language skills into consideration when giving you your assignment? Did you find that it was hard to meet locals?
Thanks for returning to repost. I appreciate it!
bald is beautiful-- thanks for the informative and interesting response!

I currently work for a DODDS school in Germany. I was very fortunate to have done my student teaching here and I impressed the right people. I completed my application in February. I was called in late July with a job offer. I was on a plane to Germany within about 10 days, and began my first year as a teacher on thr 12th of August. The pay and benefits are very generous, and most of it can be located ont he DODEA website. I don't beleive language was a consideration in my selection. From my time here in the Army I learned a bit, and after 5 years here I have learned a lot more. Meeting Germans isn't hard, and there are literally thousands of other Americans around too. All in all, I think this is the best teaching job in the world!!!
