Do military doctors carry pistols in a field hospital?

MD's to be precise, not medics. I know they wont see much fighting, and they have protected status under the Geneva Convention, thus many people believe they cant carry a weapon. But ive read that they can carry a sidearm for self defense or defense of patients in a field hospital, and still retain protected status because they don't actually fight. Is this true and do doctors in field hospitals carry sidearms (anyone who has experience in the military and field hospitals would be a great help).

Doctors and chaplains are allowed to carry firearms if they choose to do so. Doing so removes their noncombatant status. For example a doctor carrying a weapon cannot also wear the red cross armband.
