Jungle Fatigue
Wednesday, July 28th, 2010Any of you who experienced the Shaman ceremony in Peru and got a weird disease afterward?
My BF had been on a trip in Peru 2 months ago. He traveled Lima,Cusco and Iquitos. He also attended this Shaman ceremony in the Amazon jungle. When he went back to his country, exactly 3 weeks after the Shaman ceremony,he started to feel weird and get sick. It was like a extreme diarrhea at first and then he had brain fog, nausea, vomiting, extreme weakness and fatigue.First, we thought it was Malaria, and then thought it was Parasitism and now we think he got a Lyme disease. He have gone a lot and repititive laboratory test and none of it says something is wrong inside him. It is really frustrating because I could see how bad his condition is. It had been two months, there are some improvements but the symptoms like insomnia, fatigue, vomiting, headache, unable to concentrate is still there. On and off though.
I am not saying he got the disease after that Shaman thing because it could be that he got it somewhere else.
Anyone who knows something about this sickness?
Sounds terrible. The number of potential tropical diseases and parasites are too great to list here, but it probably isn't Lyme disease, since that's normally associated with more temperate climates in the Northern Hemisphere and doesn't cause intense vomiting and diarrhea. You'd also want to look for a bullseye rash around a tick bite if it were Lyme disease.
Diagnosing a tropical disease in the U.S. or Europe can be very difficult since most doctors are not familiar with afflictions that rarely, if ever, occur in their practice. I recommend finding a good infectious disease specialist with experience in tropical medicine, sooner rather than later. Be forthright about your visit to the shamanic ceremony, including whatever substances may have been ingested. While it's possible something was picked up then, it's more likely your BF got something from the food, water or an insect bite.
