How do you sew a patch onto a fleece jacket?

My daughter is in ice skating classes and has received several patches for the classes that she has completed. How do I sew these onto her fleece skating jacket? Do I need some special backing to make sure the stitches do not pull through the fleece?

No...you don't need anything special. Just sew the patches right onto the jacket.

Make sure you make many stitches all around the patch...spaced about 1/8 inch apart. Also, use a "Satin Stitch" to sew the patches on. This stitch loops over the edges of the patch. This will hold the edges much better than a running stitch. Here is an image of a Satin Stitch:
