how do i sew a patch onto a pants leg by hand?

I am new to sewing of any kind and I want to sew some patches onto a pair of old pants. I thought it would be easy. I cannot see where the needle goes and it is really hard to push it through the fabric and the patch. What is the trick? or is it just hard and takes practice?

Use a heavy duty needle, one that is bigger, I used to take something hard and use it to push the needle through. Also, pin your patch in place with a safety pin. Just catch the edge of the patch your sewing, not all the way through the patch.
