Viet Nam
Thursday, July 22nd, 2010Were you one of the Viet Nam era soldiers who received letters via Ann Landers?
In '66'ish, there was an article in Ann Landers about some of the soldiers not getting mail during mail call. She was flooded with letters from her readers. She sent these letters to Viet Nam and the soldiers got to select them. Many pen pal relationships started, including mine with an 18 yoa named Johnny from Ohio. Are there any VN era soldiers online who were on the receiving end of this and what do you think about it?
A buddy of mine received the first "Christmas letter" we had ever seen from his (former) girlfriend. You know the type of letter that is so common today - she sat at her typewrite and pounded out a "this is what we did this year" letter that is then photocopied and sent to all of your "friends". His was ultra impersonal - nothing to him specific. I remember is was one of the coldest things I had seen up to then in my poor sheltered existence. Of course now days those types of letters are very common, but my buddy was justifiably crushed.
