War White
Tuesday, September 29th, 2009Did Native Americans serving in the American Civil War serve with White Regiments?
The reason I ask, is because in the film 'Cold Mountain', the Confederates have a Native American serving with them.
I looked into Native Americans serving in the American Civil War and I know Blacks mixed with Natives served in Coloured Regiments but what about genetically pure Natives?
Usually, they fought in Native units (e.g. those mustered in Indian Territory)...and there were even native officers commanding these units (Google: Stand Watie)...in other cases they were used as scouts in white units...a few were mixed in with regular white infantry units...NOT very commonly mixed with "Colored" units (I've never heard of any examples).
