I have an embroidered beige denim jacket (it sounds really ugly, I know, but it isn't). It is stiff as a board and way too scratchy to wear. I have washed it umpteen times, soaked it overnight in fabric softener, run it in the dryer with those porcupine balls, and it refuses to soften up. If I had done all that to a pair of jeans they would probably be falling apart. Would consider running it over with the car except then I'd have to worry about getting rid of the tire marks. Any suggestions?

If you have done all that, it is pretty much impossible to do something else. The only thing that comes to mind is that possibly the jacket has some sort of resin coating. The only thing you haven't tried is dry cleaning. If there is a resin coating that doesn't come off in the wash, dry cleaning in perc may take it off. Worth a try and it won't harm it. After you can go back to washing it if the coating has been removed.
