Future USMC wife hmm. about that?!?
I'm very much in love with my boyfriend, and the topic of marriage has come up. He's in the Marines, and I've lived in this particular military town for 4 yrs and I've seen military marriages hit the fan so many times. Ironically I fall in love with a man in the service. Now I do want to marry him and things are wonderful between him and I but I am scared shitless that if we get married what we have will falter. Now we both have very strong beliefs when it comes to marriage, so do our families. I guess the real question is, is marrying someone in the military and bad idea from the very start? We fell in love at a young age me 19 and him 20, Good Lord I'm just confused, he's ready to get married, I think I am too... I'm just scared. words of wisdom anyone?!!!
I'm more concerned about your ages, than him being a Marine. Yes, military marriages fail every day. So do non-military marriages. Unfortunately, when a military marriage fails, it's usually the military that gets blamed, when in fact, it isn't. If either one of you is a cheater, you'll cheat--military or not. If you're a liar, same thing. You get the point. It's just that military break-ups tend to get lumped together. Our son's best friend in the Navy was married. His wife cheated on him. He was on shore duty and came home every single night. So, was it the Navy's fault she cheated? I don't think so. It's just an easy excuse.
If you do decide to marry understand that you are marrying the Corps as well. In fact, maybe more so. It's the Corps that will determine where you live and when he's home or not. Remember, there's an old saying that says: being a military wife is the hardest job in the military. And it's true. I know what I go through as a Navy mom and I know it's NOTHING in comparison to what a military spouse goes through. When I'm feeling blue and worried about our son, guess what? My hubby is right here to put his arm around me and tell me it's going to be okay. And when I get a flat tire, I just make a phone call and he's there in 20 minutes and it's fixed. A military wife has to learn to hug herself and fix her own tire. Add kids to that and I hope you're ready to be a single mom a great deal of the time.
And it doesn't matter if he's only got a couple years left or he's going to be a lifer. You've still got to get through year one before you can survive year two.
I don't mean to sound so gloomy, but I'm sure you can see the good in being a military wife, it's the bad that love can blur and blind you from.
If you do decide to marry, never lose sight of the fact that it's an honor to be a military wife. If you can't see that, then you're in for trouble.
