About 1965 the North Vietnamese ran out of South Vietnamese Communists that fled north when the couturiers were divided in 1954 which they had been arming and infiltrating back into South Vietnam to fight as the Viet Cong. They started supplementing the infiltrators with NVA regulars to maintain the VC's strength. They also started sending NVA units up to regimental size south. About the same time Johnson started deploying US Army and Marine combat units into South Vietnam.
The US military did not consider the ARVN aggressive enough to go after the VC and NVA units deployed to South Vietnam. So, the US military took over most of the responsibility to track down, engage, and destroy the communist units which were located in the rural areas to the west. The ARVN was deployed to the urban areas to guard the large population centers. It was also felt it would be better to have native soldiers interfacing with the larger population in the urban areas then foreign Americans.
This policy caused a lot of resentment among the grunts out pounding the ground in the rural areas getting ambushed and facing booby traps every day. However, it worked. The communists were more or less confined to the western rural areas near the borders. Many of their units were forced to hide across the boarder where the Americans couldn’t track them down and destroy them.
The NLF leadership was just sure that if they could break out of the rural areas and confront the ARVN directly the South Vietnamese Army would shatter and surrender. They were also convinced that the South Vietnamese people would rally to the Communist cause and rise up against the American occupiers and throw them out of the country.
So, the big TET Offensive of 1968 was conceived out of the communist failures of 65-67. The VC would infiltrate into the urban areas under cover of the holiday truce, and on the last day, break the truce and come out fighting. The ARVN, on leave for the holidays, would be dispersed and unable to fight back. The South Vietnamese people would rally to the Communist fighters, and a great victory would be gained.
Didn’t quite work out the way they planed. First, the ARVN rushed back to their units and fought back. Second, the South Vietnamese people did rally…to the South Vietnamese government. Third, the much maligned ARVN proved to be every bit as good a soldier as their much vaunted VC/NVA counterparts. They didn’t just fight them to a standstill, they annihilated them. What was worse was that the NLF had come out of hiding to takeover the reigns of government they expected to fall into their hands, and they were annihilated too. TET was a disaster for the Communist cause. The VC and NLF ceased to exist after that event. The rest of the war was fought by regular NVA troops pretending to be VC.
Unfortunately the liberal press completely misunderstood what had really happened. Led by the most trusted man in America, Walter Cronkite, they concluded that, because the VC had succeeded in infiltrating the urban areas, they were somehow unbeatable, and the US should abandon our erstwhile allies and run.
In the end the liberal press and their antiwar buddies got their way. The communists took over Southeast Asia and murdered around 5,000,000 men, women and children to consolidate their control
