What are steps Canada took to defend itself against Communism during the Post-War period?
Like her neighbours to the south, Canada too was infected by waves of paranoia and fear. Efforts were made to eradicate the homegrown communists, real and imagined, and like that of the United States, the investigations into these so-called "threats" left a trail of destroyed careers and ruined lives. At the height of the Cold War, Canada developed a top-secret plan to detain thousands of citizens with Communist links, officials said.
Called PROFUNC, the plan allowed police to round up and indefinitely detain Canadians believed to be Communist sympathizers in the event of a national security threat, the CBC reported. PROFUNC stands for Prominent Functionaries of the Communist Party, and is believed to be one of the most draconian national security programs in Canada's peacetime history, the report said.
Under the plan, those listed could be detained indefinitely, could be subjected to severe discipline, and could be shot if they tried to escape detention. The plan was devised in 1950 by Stuart Taylor Wood, then commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. It listed some 16,000 suspected Communists, and up to 50,000 sympathizers to be watched, and possibly interned, in a national security emergency.
If it were 1950 today, I would be one of the 50,000 sympathizers on the RCMP's list.
